Action 2.1 – Compilation of Meteorological Observations

Results of the first half year
1. Setup of a common list of the requested parameters and length of time series (I-IV.2006) Results: * very limited feedback on the circulated data questionnaire * suggestion: concentration on precipitation and near-surface temperature * 30-year period for the length of time series suggested 2. Supply of meteorological data from the project participants to PIK‘s database (IV-VII.2006) * 10 Slovak stations supplied to project‘s database, (1951(87)-2005, daily), * data from Poland, Italy, Greek (in progress) * 750 additional German precipitation stations received from DWD ( ) * 300 additional stations extracted from the synoptical dataset DS512 for the CADSES region ( , incomplete series) Action 2.1. Conclusions based on the actual achievments: Compilation of a common dataset on the basis of station observations with sufficient spatial and temporal coverage is not possible Alternative: Compilation of a gridded dataset of daily temperature and precipitation with 0.5° resolution Basis for gridded dataset: Daily Re-Analysis from ECMWF + observation from available stations + gridded monthly data from the global Potsdam Climate Data Set (PCDS) for land areas. Ongoing work for activity 2. Supply of meteorological data from the project participants to PIK‘s database (IV-VII.2006): Re-Analysis (ERA40) extracted from ECMWF archive ( ) Action 2.1. 3. Quality control and homogeneity analysis (VI-X.2006) First results: - 750 German and 10 Slovakia stations controlled and homogenized - ERA40 compared with observation data (German stations): Temperature: * ERA40 is 0.3°K to warm, * correlation of ERA40 to observation: (summer) (winter) Precipitation: * ERA40 is 20-25% to dry (winter better as summer), * correlation of ERA40 to observation: 0.5 (summer) (winter) * years 1972, are 40-50% too moist Action 2.1.
