4 On June 7, 1948 , the U.S., U.K., and France announced their plan to reunite West Germany.

5 Rather than using military force to end the blockade, Truman organized a large airlift.

6 American and British planes delivered food, fuel, and other supplies to the people of West Berlin.

7 Member nations agreed to fight the spread of communism.

8 The Soviet Union responded by forming an alliance called the Warsaw Pact.
