Lesson Plan First, we will talk about the boring stuff like standards, objectives, vocabulary, and the essential question (by Aiden) Second, we will teach you the good stuff about the circulatory system (by Param) Next, you will take a test/quiz/exam/assessment (by Arnett) Finally, we will do an activity involving the circulatory system (by Silas)

Standard Identify and investigate the general functions of the circulatory system and describe 3 ways the circulatory system interacts with other body systems to maintain homeostasis.

Vocabulary Circulatory System- the system that circulates blood and lymph through the body, consisting of the heart, blood vessels, blood, lymph, and the lymphatic vessels and glands. Heart- a hollow muscular organ that pumps the blood through the circulatory system by rhythmic contraction and dilation. In vertebrates there may be up to four chambers (as in humans), with two atria and two ventricles Artery-Blood vessel that carries blood from and away from the heart Vein-Blood vessel the carries blood to the heart Capillary-Tiny blood vessel that provides exchange between blood and body cells

Heart-The pump of the circulatory system that moves blood around the body Blood Vessels(Veins, Arteries, Capillaries) Blood

What Systems Does the Circulatory System Work With?
Lymphatic System-Every time the heart pumps, a little fluid comes out of capillaries. The lymphatic system is responsible for collecting that fluid and returning it to the blood Respiratory System-When you breath in, the oxygen you take in is given to your heart and moved throughout the body to be delivered to cells in the blood Immune System-Your blood contains white blood cells and antibodies that are part of the immune system

Functions of the Circulatory System
Move blood, nutrients, and hormones throughout the body

Heart Has a left and right side separated by a wall(remind you of any 2 countries and the president elect?) The right side of your heart pumps blood without much oxygen to the lungs to get refilled The left side of your heart sends blood with oxygen to the rest of your body Both sides of your heart have an upper chamber(atrium) and lower chamber(ventricle) Blood enters the atria and goes to the ventricles and exits through flaps called valves These valves are the reason you can hear your heart beat. That sound you hear is the valves closing. They do that because they want to prevent backwards flow of blood. About the size of your fist The heart is actually a muscle, allowing it to contract to push blood

Blood Not Blood is actually a connective tissue because it contains 2 or more types of cells Blood helps maintain homeostasis by sending messages, delivering nutrients, and getting rid of waste Blood also helps maintain homeostasis by carrying the cells of the immune system to where they need to be The fluid part of blood is called plasma. It contains nutrients, water, and waste. It is like the cytoplasm of a cell. Platelets are parts of bone marrow. They help form blood clots. Red blood cells carry oxygen throughout your body with hemoglobin White blood cells help fight pathogens. This is one way that the circulatory system maintains homeostasis.

Blood Flow Blood flows in circuits
The pulmonary circuit is the flow of blood between the heart and lungs The systemic circuit is the flow of blood between the heart and the rest of the body Blood goes from the heart to the lungs(Right side of heart). Then it goes back to the heart(left side). After that it flows through the arteries, then the capillaries and finally the veins back to the right side of the heart. Blood flow can help maintain homeostasis because when blood vessels expand they lower body temperature because when the blood vessels expand the heat of the blood is released to the air around the skin

There is three types of blood vessels: Arteries, veins, and capillaries Arteries have strong thick walls Capillaries are so small they have to have cells go single file through them Every cell is within 5 cells of a capillary The movement of blood from and back to the heart goes: Artery Capillary Vein

Bad Things That Can Happen to the Circulatory System
Atherosclerosis is when artery walls harden up because of cholesterol or lipids. Therefore, blood can’t get where it needs to go. Hypertension is abnormally high blood pressure and can lead to atherosclerosis Heart attacks occur when heart muscles can not get blood or oxygen Strokes occur when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked or bursts. The brain can not get blood and will have a stroke
