4 Unit 23 (gerunds) Gerunds look like __________, but act like __________. Because of this, gerunds can be subjects or objects. Studying is so much fun! Luisa enjoys shopping. Infinitives of purpose answer the question why? What is it used for? Why did you decide to go to school at Mt. Sac? To study English. In formal writing, we use in order to + base form to explain a purpose. I use the computer in order to create your Powerpoint presentation. (Informal) I use the computer to create your Powerpoint presentation.

After adjectives It’s difficult to study when I think of Oscar. After adverbs She finished her work quickly to go to sleep. Which adverb tells you that something is impossible.
