Gerunds and Infinitives
Form and Uses

Form Gerund: you add –ing to a verb:
ie. Meet > Meeting The negative – Add NOT before the –ing form. Infinitive: you add “to” before the base form of a verb: ie. Meet > To meet The negative – Add NOT before the to infinitive.

Uses: the gerund After some verbs:
Suggest: I suggested going to the cinema. Recommend: We recommend eating an apple every day. Enjoy: She enjoyed singing in small pubs. Finish … (check your book for a longer list of examples)

Uses: the gerund In some expressions:
It’s no good: It’s no good eating a lot of popcorn. It’s not worth: It’s not worth eating a salad when you can eat a pizza! It’s no use: It’s no use cleaning the bedroom if you make a mess again just right after that. It’s a waste of time: It’s a waste of time cleaning my room. It will be a mess again! Spend time: I spend time tidying up my bedroom. Can’t help: I can’t help singing bad.

Speaking in public makes me nervous.
Uses: the gerund As subject in a sentence when we talk about general actions Speaking in public makes me nervous. Paying attention is essential in class.

Uses: the gerund After prepositions I´m interested in studying maths.
She was annoyed for arriving late. I am looking forward to hearing from you

Uses: the infinitive After some verbs, such as:
Want / wish / hope: I want to travel around the world next year Agree Appear / seem Choose Learn Plan Promise Refuse … (Check your book for a longer list)

Uses: the infinitive After some adjectives:
Scared to: He was scared to see another pirate. Happy to: He was happy to be in the Oscars ceremony

The meaning is the same!! Begin Propose Like/ dislike: I like eating chocolate / I like to eat chocolate. Hate Love Start: They started answering the letter / They started to answer the letter

THE MEANING IS DIFFERENT!! Stop + infinitive: He stopped to drink a coffee. Stop + gerund: He stopped drinking coffee.

Remember + gerund: I remember closing the window Remember + infinitive: I remembered to close the window. Yesterday Today at 8pm
