1
The Cell Cycle and Mitosis
2
By the end of today you will be able to:
Name and describe the main events of the cell cycle.
3
The Cell Cycle The events of a cell’s life: Growth and metabolism
Cell division
4
The Cell Cycle is divided into two parts
Interphase – (when growth and metabolism takes place) M phase –(when mitosis and cell division occurs)
5
Interphase Mostly engaged in normal cell metabolism
But also getting ready for cell division --The cell grows --DNA replicates --Other organelles duplicate
6
Most of the cell cycle is Interphase
7
Mitosis Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase
8
What happens to DNA in mitosis?
Chromatin condenses in chromosomes at the beginning of prophase (Chromatin is the complex of DNA and associated proteins found in the nucleus) Chromatin Chromosomes
9
Chromosome Replication
Chromosomes are replicated to form identical copies of themselves. Two identical copies of a chromosome are called “sister” chromatids Centromere - area where the chromatids of a chromosome are attached
14
Cytokinesis -Cytoplasmic division and formation of two identical daughter cells
15
Checkpoint 1. The break down of a cell’s entire life is the _______ ________. 2. The phase of the cell cycle when the cell is growing, replicating DNA and getting ready for mitosis is _____________. 3-6. What are the four phases of Mitosis? 7. The process of a cell actually splitting in two is called _______________.
