1 Bell ringer: Mouths are quiet. Get your binder and begin the quick review section of your notes. Raise your hand if you need something.

2 Bell Ringer What three structures are found in plant cells but not animal cells? Which type of cells will perform photosynthesis? How is the shape of plant and animal cells different?

3 Bell Ringer What three structures are found in plant cells but not animal cells? Chloroplast, cell wall, large central vacuole Which type of cells will perform photosynthesis? How is the shape of plant and animal cells different?

4 Bell Ringer What three structures are found in plant cells but not animal cells? Chloroplast, cell wall, large central vacuole Which type of cells will perform photosynthesis? Plant cells How is the shape of plant and animal cells different?

5 Bell Ringer What three structures are found in plant cells but not animal cells? Chloroplast, cell wall, large central vacuole Which type of cells will perform photosynthesis? Plant cells How is the shape of plant and animal cells different? Plant cells are square and rigid, animal cells are round and more flexible.

6 The Cell Cycle BY THE END OF THE DAY YOU WILL:
Be able to describe the purpose of the cell cycle. Be able to describe the stages of mitosis.

7 Key Points Chromosomes are DNA coiled tightly around a protein, they are held together by a centromere Remember: DNA is our genetic/hereditary information

8 Key Points The cell cycle is responsible for helping organisms grow, reproduce, and repair. (The cell cycle is GRReat).

9 Key Points STAGE 1: Interphase
The part of the cell cycle that occurs before mitosis. The cell grows and copies its DNA.

10 Prophase = Chromosomes form and become visible
Key Points STAGE 2: Mitosis Prophase = Chromosomes form and become visible Metaphase (middle) = Chromosomes line up in the center of the cell

11 Key Points STAGE 2: Mitosis Prophase = Chromosomes form and become visible Metaphase (middle) = Chromosomes line up in the center of the cell Anaphase (away) = Chromosomes split at the centromere and pulled to opposite sides of the cell Telophase (two new cells) = Chromosomes unwind and two new nuclei begin to form

12 Key Points STAGE 3: Cytokinesis
Cell splits into two new daughter cells

13 Guided Practice On the front of your notes  Work WITH us, not ahead.

14 The teacher will fill out the blank boxes above and explain each phase.

15 I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T
Please turn in your independent practice worksheet. I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS? “I do my own work!”

16 Notes away, mouths closed.
If there is time left: EXIT TICKET TIME Notes away, mouths closed.

17 1. Which of the following choices is not a purpose of the cell cycle?
Repair Growth Mutation Reproduction C

18 2. If you are observing a cell and notice that the chromosomes are separated at the centromere and are being pulled to opposite ends of the cell, which stage of mitosis are you observing? Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase C

19 3. Which of the following choices is true about chromosomes?
They are made of DNA and found in the nucleus. They shrink and disappear during interphase. They are made of proteins and found in the cytoplasm. They do not exist in metaphase or anaphase of mitosis. A

20 4. Which phase of mitosis is shown in cell number 11?
Prophase C. Anaphase Metaphase D. Telophase B

21 The cell grows and copies its DNA.
5. Which of the following choices explains what occurs during cytokinesis? The cell grows and copies its DNA. The chromosomes move to separate sides of the cell. The cell shrinks and combines with another cell. The single cell splits into two new cells. D
