2 How do you find the volume of a regular solid object?

3 You must show the following three steps:
1.) V = L x W x H 2.) V = _______ cm x ________ cm x _______ cm 3.) V = ________ cm3 Measure the object in cm using a metric ruler or meter stick. Volume of a solid is measured in cm3. Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.

An irregular object has an odd shape and is difficult to measure. You find the volume of an irregular object using water displacement. Steps: 1.) Measure and record volume of water in graduated cylinder 2.) Add object and record new measurement 3.) Subtract volume of water from volume of water + object Include units - (cm3) since you are finding the volume of a solid.

7 Density is the amount of matter (mass - g) an object has within a certain amount of space (volume – cm3). Formula: D = mass or D = M ÷ V volume To find density, you must follow three steps: 1.) D=M V 2.) D = _______ g ÷ _______ cm3 3.) D = _____________ g/cm3

8 How do you find the mass of an object?

9 1.) Place the object on the pan of a triple beam balance
2.) Start with the middle beam – move the rider to the right until the beam hits the bottom – then slide the rider back one notch. 3.) Repeat with the rear (back) beam. 4.) Slowly move the front rider until the little lines on the right side line up, indicating that it is balanced. 5.) Add the masses on each beam – this equals the total mass of the object in GRAMS (g).

Mass is the amount of matter in an object. It remains constant. Weight is the amount of gravity pulling down on an object. It changes based on the gravity (ex. You weigh 1/6 your weight on the moon)

22 Can two objects with different densities be made out of the exact same material?

23 No, objects must have the exact same density in order to be the exact same material.
Ex. gold bar and gold nugget

24 How do you know if an object will sink or float in a liquid?

25 Ex. Density of an object is 0.5g/cm3 Density of water is 1.0g/mL
An object will float in a liquid if the density of the object is less than the density of the liquid. Ex. Density of an object is 0.5g/cm3 Density of water is 1.0g/mL The object will FLOAT in water because it is less dense. An object will sink in a liquid if the density of the object is greater than the density of the liquid. Ex. Density of an object is 2.5g/cm3 The object will SINK in water because it is more dense. *Always check the density of the liquid given – it may NOT always be water!!! This will affect whether objects SINK or FLOAT.

26 Be able to draw lines in cm and in mm using a metric ruler!

27 If you take a wooden block and cut it into pieces, what is the density of one of the pieces compared to the whole wooden block? Would the piece be more dense, less dense, or equally dense to the whole wooden block?

28 The density of the piece of the wooden block would be equal to the density of the whole wooden block. The mass and the volume would both be decreasing, but they remain proportional to the original mass and volume of the whole block, so the density stays the same. Ex. If you rip a piece of paper into a bunch of pieces, each piece has the same density because it is still made of the exact same material.
