2 Who? High poverty neighborhoods and low income homes
24%- Children under 18 in families in NC who had incomes below the poverty line in 2014 By the time a child on welfare reaches the age of 4, he/she might only have heard 13 million words opposed to an average 45 million

3 What? -A geographic area (country, state, county, city, neighborhood, home) where printed books and other reading materials are hard to obtain, particularly without access to an automobile or other form of transportation Children’s learning and comprehension skills are negatively affected Serious consequences on literacy Developing brains are delicate -> affect ability to understand later in life

4 When? Problem is happening constantly “Summer slump”
A synergistic effect of not being in school, plus not having books at home Not able to expand reading and learning abilities outside of school

5 Where? Prevalent in high-poverty, low income neighborhoods (all across the U.S.) Urban places where a large community of children reside

6 Why? Not enough books around because of location (bookstores, libraries) Only 8 percent of such families report they have taken advantage of library resources Money for food, gas, rent, etc. come before books Growing income segregation Higher income neighborhoods have “16x as many books” per children as lower income

7 How? Building an easily accessible book exchange by:
Creating a template Calculating the costs Creating a plan of action that takes into account participants time Goal: Provide a renewed source of learning and literacy through the depository. When to reach our goal?: Before the end of winter.
