Why are we getting you together?
It is crucial that our most able students fulfil their potential. We need to harness the talents of these students so that they can become the next generation of business, intellectual and political leaders. If we succeed, it will benefit not only them as individuals but our country as a whole (Ofsted, 2013 The most able students report)

What are the aims of this session?
What is a horizon student? What is their expected progress? What actions should come from reports? How is the school supporting? How should they be using their time during their summer holidays productively? What additional information do you need from us to support your child with their learning?
4
What is a horizon student?
A horizon student is the term we use in school to identify the most able learners. They are identified through KS2 data (SATs) Students who arrive with KS2 data of a 5 or above are classed as horizon students. This information is share with staff, so that they can plan for the students in their lessons.
5
What is their expected progress?
Nationally the most able students: They have arrived from primary with KS2 results of level 5 or above in Maths and English. This means that they should be leaving school with GCSEs of A/A*/8/9. Nationally - The most able girls continue to outperform the most able boys significantly.
6
What does the expected progress look like?
7
Grades and points
8
Changes to GCSE Maths Fewer questions which are structured, straightforward ‘recall’ or aided (e.g. with diagram). More questions, which are multi-topic, multistep, applications (which require students to choose their mathematical tools and show fluency in their layout). More justification, mathematical reasoning, proof, problem solving.
9
Changes to GCSE English
Un-tiered papers. In literature: Closed book assessment for all components. In language: Equal weighting for reading and writing; Emphasis on evaluation as a distinct assessment objective; Increased weighting for technical accuracy.
10
How should they be using their time during their summer holidays productively?
Focus on the CORE Maths – focus on the topics from the assessment that were the weakest. English Macbeth: re-read, watch any film version or even better a play version ( would be great to take them to see a production!) learn quotes. A Christmas Carol: re-read, watch any film version, read another Dickens’ novel (Great Expectations, Bleak House, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield) learn quotes. DNA – re read. Learn quotes. Reading novels of their choice.
