3. The SATs They will take place in the week beginning 14th May.
The exact timetable has not been confirmed but it seems likely to be:
Monday 14th – English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (SPaG)
Tuesday 15th – Reading
Wednesday 16th – Maths Reasoning and Arithmetic
Thursday 17th – Second Maths Reasoning Paper

4. English; SPaG
SPaG consists of two papers; one for punctuation and grammar, which lasts 45 minutes and requires short written answers plus a second spelling paper of which lasts about 15 minutes.
The written paper usually has between questions. These can be ‘identify’ questions or ‘construct’ questions.
The spelling paper has 20 questions. All the words are taken from the Year 5/6 spelling list.

5. English; Reading
The reading test is a single paper with questions based on three passages of text. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test.
There will be a selection of question types, including:
Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’
Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’
Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’
Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’
Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’

6. English; Reading
From 2018 the Department for Education has announced that the reading content of the KS2 SATs will be more closely linked to the curriculum to ensure children are drawing on their knowledge when answering reading comprehension questions.

7. English; Writing Writing is not assessed using a formal timed paper.
Instead it is ‘teacher assessed’.
A set of guidelines is issued to teachers to guide them in their assessments.
Work is collated over the year.
The level the children achieve is reported as either ‘At expected level’ or ‘Working towards expected level’.

8. Maths Children sit three papers in maths:
Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes
Papers 2 and 3: reasoning, 40 minutes per paper
Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division. 
Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including:
Multiple choice
True or false
Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart
Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem

9. Science There is not a formal science assessment.
Instead, a small sample of school are required to undertake science sampling tests.
These will be in mid-June.

10. Scoring and results
For Reading, SPaG and Maths, the children receive a standardised score.
For a child to be ‘on track’, they should receive a score of 100 or above. (100 is the national average).
Every year the score needed to achieve 100 in each paper is changed (raw score).
80 is the lowest score and 120 the highest.
Again, scores are reported as ‘Achieved national standard’ or ‘Expected standard not achieved’.
Results arrive in school usually during the first week of July.
