1
Predicting Products Decide what type of reaction it is based on what the reactants given. Figure out what will happen to the reactants (how they will react)
2
TIP: Remember the exceptions
TIP: Remember the exceptions! See “Types of Reactions” Notes from the very beginning of this unit.
3
Combination/Synthesis
A + B AB Probable Product: A single compound Mg + O2
4
Decomposition AB A + B Probable Product: More than 1 compound and/or element Ca(OH)2
5
Single Replacement A + BC AC + B
Probable Product: A single element and new compound Use activity series to determine if a reaction will happen! Cu + AgNO3
6
Double Replacement AB + CD AD + CB
Probable Product: Two new compounds Use solubility rules to determine which product is the precipitate and (if any) which are spectators
7
Precipitate Predictions
Use the solubility chart to determine if any of the products will be insoluble (ppt) from the aqueous reactants Pb(NO3)2 + H2SO4 Na3PO4 + AlCl3
8
Combustion CxHy + O2 CO2 + H2O
Probable products (if reactant is a hydrocarbon): CO2 & H2O
9
Practice K2O + H2O K2CO3 + BaCl2 NaCl + F2 C3H8 + O2
