Week of September 6th, Due: Monday, September 12th.
FYI Week of September 6th, Due: Monday, September 12th. This is the students’ reading log. The grade for this goes under effort in the reading section of the report card. This sub-category is worth 15% of their total reading grade. The following is what I am looking for: Their reading needs to be done out side of school time. Fifth graders are expected to read chapter books for at least half of their total reading time. The rest of it may be in magazines, graphic novels, etc. if they would like to do this and you approve. Graphic novels are comic books and those books like Wimpy Kids. A chapter book tells a story and less than 10% of the book is illustrations. Students need to read a minimum of 120 minutes a week. (This is a bare minimum. Fifth graders should read twice this to stay on level and stay fluent). Students need to report what they read on this sheet. I take a language grade in the category of written language on this paper weekly as well as the reading grade. Thus, they must fill this out using proper sentence structure and punctuation. One of these is due at the beginning of each school week. 5 What book or books did you read this week? Start with “I am reading” (Remember to underline and punctuate the title correctly. You try: Tell me if you are beginning the book, finished the book or are in the middle of the book. Example: I am beginning to read A Wrinkle in Time and am about half way through it. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Who was the author? The author is ( Write in a complete sentence. ________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ This week you need to explain a character from the book you are reading. You need to describe the character with physical traits as well as personality traits. Example: Charles Wallace is a child prodigy. He has sandy brown hair and a stock build. He has learned to hide his intelligence to fit in, but talks like an adult with his immediate family. He is a loving and honest person. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Parent Signature: __________________________________________ Student Signature: _________________________________________Min.
