1 J. K. ROWLING born 1965

2 J. K. ROWLING British novelist, screenwriter and film producer
The books have gained worldwide attention, won multiple awards, and sold more than 500 million copies Have been translated into seventy-three languages They have become the best-selling book series in history and been the basis for a series of films She conceived the idea for the Harry Potter series while on a delayed train from Manchester to London in 1990. The seven-year period that followed saw the death of her mother, birth of her first child, divorce from her first husband and relative poverty until she finished the first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, in 1997

3 J. K. ROWLING Rowling has lived a "rags to riches" life story, in which she progressed from living on state benefits to multi-millionaire status within five years She is the United Kingdom's best-selling living author

4 Harry Potter 1997 A series of fantasy novels.
The central character in the series is Harry Potter, an English boy who lives with his aunt, uncle, and cousin, and who discovers, at the age of eleven, that he is a wizard His magical ability is inborn and children with such abilities are invited to attend exclusive magic schools that teach the necessary skills to succeed in the wizarding world. Harry becomes a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a wizarding academy in Scotland and it is here where most of the events in the series take place.  As Harry develops through his adolescence, he learns to overcome the problems that face him: magical, social and emotional, including ordinary teenage challenges such as friendships, infatuation, romantic relationships, schoolwork and exams, anxiety, depression, stress The novels chronicle his life and his friends’ Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, The main story arc concerns Harry's struggle against Lord Voldemort, a dark wizard who intends to become immortal,

5 Harry Potter The novels fall within the genre of fantasy literature and qualify as a type of fantasy called "urban fantasy" has an urban setting set in a city. Contain elements of mystery, adventure, horror, thriller, and romance

6 THEMES According to Rowling, the main theme is death. Rowling does not describe death as something to be feared or dreaded, but rather a part of the natural cycle of life that should be embraced as part of an individual's humanity

7 THEMES Other major themes in the series include prejudice, corruption, and madness,  power/abuse of power, violence and hatred, love, loss, and free choice Making one's way through adolescence A message to "question authority and... not assume that the establishment or the press tells you all of the truth"

8 THEMES Love plays a crucial role. By sacrificing her own life to save that of her son, Lily Potter gave Harry a magical form of protection that shielded him from Voldemort's curse and nearly destroyed the dark wizard. This ensures that Harry will never be seduced by the Dark Arts. Harry's ability to love also provides him with a support system of friends

9 THEMES The Importance of Rebellion
Ron, and Hermione break many school rules in pursuing their adventures. Harry, in particular, is always willing to break a Hogwarts rule if it means taking action or doing something that he believes is right. Harry never breaks the rules simply for the sake of breaking them: he breaks rules only when he truly believes that his actions are necessary.

10 THEMES Humility Harry's humility is, in part, a direct result of his neglected childhood with the Dursleys. Because he was never treated as someone who was special, Harry grew up with the understanding that respect is not readily given and must be achieved.

11 THEMES Friendship Before coming to Hogwarts, Harry is completely isolated. Not only does he not have a loving family environment, but he does not have any friends to serve as a support system. After becoming a student at Hogwarts, however, Harry quickly creates a large group of friends but, more importantly, a close relationship with Ron and Hermione.
