Conflict Definition – A struggle between opposing forces. Sometimes it is internal and sometimes it is external. Reference – An external conflict happens in “To Build A Fire” on page 608. How It’s Used – It is used to deal with a problem between two characters.

Exposition Definition – A writing or speech that explains or presents information. Reference – “Onomatopoeia” by William Safire on page 1,115. How It’s Used – To explain information to the reader.

Imagism Definition – Short poems that use ordinary language and free verse to create sharper, exact, concentrated pictures. Reference – Poetry by Pounds on page 732. How It’s Used – To get to the point of the subject.

Ode Definition – A formal lyric poem with a serious theme that may have traditional stanza structure. Reference – “Song of Myself” by Walt Whitman How It’s Used – To honor people or commemorate events.

Rhyme Definition – A repetition of sound at the end of a word.
Reference – “The Cat In The Hat” by Dr. Seuss. How It’s Used - To have words sound similar but not exact.

Theme Definition – The main point in a story.
Reference – “A Worn Path” by Eudora Welty, the reader’s learn the theme indirectly. How It’s Used – It’s used a central message to be revealed in literature.
