Force and Mass September 2016
2
What is force? Definition: a push or a pull.
3
How can Force affect the Motion of an object?
If an object is already in motion , you will need to add more force to make it go faster. If objects have the same mass, then whichever one has the most force will go faster. Example: Baseball If I hit the baseball with more force then it will speed up faster than if I hit it with less force.
4
How can Force affect the Motion of an object?
If an object needs to slow down quickly, then you need to apply more force. Example: Bike If I need to slow the bike down very quickly then I will pull the handle breaks hard in order to force the stop. Otherwise you would just lightly pull the handles to slow down slowly. The more force applied to an object makes it change direction more quickly. Example: Baseball bat hitting a baseball If you hit the ball with more force it will change direction and speed more quickly If you hit the ball with less force (bunt) it will change direction and speed less quickly - bunt
5
How can Force affect the Shape of an object?
Change in shape of an object depends on the magnitude of the force that is acting on it. If there is more force then there is more shape change.
6
How can Force affect the Orientation of an object?
Refers to the relative position of an object. A force can cause an object’s orientation to change. If there is more force, then the object will change orientation more.
7
Mass Definition: how much space an object takes up.
8
How does MASS change the MOTION of an object?
More force must be applied to a heavier object to make it move faster. If you give the same force to two different objects, the smaller object will move faster.
9
How does MASS change the MOTION of an object?
To slow down, or stop, a heavier object, you must apply more force. The heavier or larger the object, the more difficult it is to change the direction.
10
How does MASS change the Shape of an object?
Change in the shape , depends on the mass of the object colliding with the object. If two objects with different masses collide, the smaller one will have more damage.
11
How does MASS change the Orientation of an object?
A change in orientation depends on the mass of the object. If two objects with different masses collide, the larger one can make the smaller one change orientation.
