Increasing Digital Inclusion
Sarah Beard Business Development Director, Maggie’s Secondment at Doteveryone AMBU ahead of the curve, real pleasure to be here. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

Three quarters of the UK population go on-line every day
We’re using the internet to shop, bank, arrange travel, pay bills, connect with friends and listen to music…. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

The internet touches every area of our lives: it has made things faster, cheaper, better
….for many its transformed the way we live @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL
5
Over 12 million people in the UK lack Basic Digital Skills and over 6 million people have never been on-line. In Wales, 474,000 people are digitally excluded BUT…..many people aren’t online. Almost 20% of people in Wales aren’t on-line. So there is a lot for us to do…. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL
6
Digital inclusion is about people being able to use digital technologies, particularly the internet, in ways that enhance their lives and contribute to overcoming disadvantages So what do the terms digitally included or digitally excluded actually mean….For Welsh Government, Digital inclusion is about people being able to use digital technologies, particularly the internet, in ways that enhance their lives and contribute to over-coming disadvantages they may face. The need is now greater than ever as digital transactions are increasingly becoming the preferred way of delivering services for providers and users alike. In fact some transactions, even in the public sector are only available on-line @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

People use the internet if they have the skills, infrastructure, motivation, and know the benefits
It may sounds obvious, but people who are using the internet in their every day lives, are doing so because they have the skills, the infrastructure – they have a broadband, a computer, tablet or mobile phone, and importantly have the motivation because the know the benefits it provides….so who’s not using the internet…..and why? @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

@C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL The colours on this map mean –
Dark purples represent digitally excluded – those not using the internet, and the lighter colours highlight those who are using it. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

Specifically looking at this area – served by AMBU….
Swansea and Bridgend have more people using the internet than not, but in Neath – the population is generally not on-line. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

How many of us have broadband in our homes…
How many of us have broadband in our homes….the whole area is pretty well served…and we’re going to hear later this morning from Steve Phillips about the exciting digital infrastructure project that is ‘Swansea bay region – city deal. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL
11
38% of people used all five skills within last 3 months,
36% in Neath and 37% in Bridgend @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL
12
75% of adults in Swansea have the digital skills –
5 basic skills include: Managing information Communicating Transacting Creating Problem solving With similar figures is Neath 72% and Bridgend 73% @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

Who are digitally excluded
Who are digitally excluded? People who are older, disabled, living in social housing, on lower incomes or unemployed For those people who are well and able, people generally don’t go on-line because they lack the skills, don’t have the infrastructure – no broadband at home or kit……and as a result don’t appreciate or understand the benefits, so aren’t motivated to learn. People who are unemployed or on low incomes may not be able to afford to go on-line – although the irony is that data suggests that people can ‘save’ money by going on-line – finding better deals, and cheaper services. Elderly and disabled people may struggle with the eye sight and dexterity – and as such going-on line themselves may be a significant challenge. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

The network age brings incredible opportunities for healthcare
The network age brings incredible opportunities for healthcare. The challenge is to ensure that digital health and care services are designed around the needs of the hardest to reach and the least digitally skilled There’s no denying that the network age brings incredible opportunities for healthcare. Digital health tools and information can make care more accessible. But those with the most health and social care needs - like the elderly and those with disabilities are often least likely to be on-line…..so how are we going to address this?? @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

We don’t fix what’s broken We show what’s possible
By everyone, For everyone We don’t fix what’s broken We show what’s possible I’ve spent the last 3 months working with Baroness Martha Lane Fox, and her team at Doteveryone. Martha Lane Fox founded the website Last Minute.com and has since gone on to advise the UK Government on Digital Skills. In 2012 she founded Go On UK – a digital skills organisation…which has recently merged with Doteveryone. Doteveryone …want to make Britain brilliant in the network age….for everyone It’s not about fixing what’s broken but about demonstrating what’s possible…raise awareness and motivate people into understanding the benefits. Martha’s story – understanding of health care services @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

Recommendations: UK to become world leading network economy
To ensure everyone can benefit from this – we must: Give people the necessary digital skills Get more women in Tech Re-invent public services so that they are fit for purpose in the modern age Doteveryone has recently made some bold Recommendations to the UK Government – Doteveryone truly believes that Britain can become the world leading networked economy and is passionate that as a nation we aim high But in order to success and ensure everyone gets the benefits from this, People need to have the necessary skills - currently just 17% of tech jobs are held by women re-invent public services – what will or could our school and hospitals really looking like in ten years time – and how can we really redesign DIGITAL public services around the needs of those who use them? Doteveryone is undertaking a project to demonstrate how technology can help improve services for elderly people with life limiting conditions…. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL
17
Getting digital services right for elderly people with life-limiting conditions will pave the way for a better NHS for everyone. This is a big, complex undertaking. For those people who are well and able, people generally don’t go on-line because they lack the skills, don’t have the infrastructure – no broadband at home or kit……and as a result don’t appreciate or understand the benefits, so aren’t motivated to learn.

Mass-market products leave many behind
All to often, those with the most needs are marginalised, and many are left behind…. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

Designing for the furthest first makes it easier to get it right for everyone
Doteveryone wants to encourage everyone to design for the furthest first @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

Internet enabled technologies can radically transform health care services to improve experiences. Far from removing face-to-face contact they should focus on improving outcomes, always starting with what patients and carers need and want. Internet enabled technologies can radically transform health care services to improve experiences. Far from removing face-to-face contract they should focus on improving peoples outcomes, always starting with what patients and carers need and want. With the network age comes great opportunities to place more power in the people own hands in relations to their own health care destines. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL
21
Technology should help clinicians to deliver more care, more effectively. And help patients and carers to spend more time doing the things that really matter. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

Digital tools and services can help people: Manage appointments
Order repeat prescriptions Monitor and manage their own health Better engage with their own health Communicate with clinical teams Create support networks Feel more empowered There are many on-line tools that support and empower people to engage with their own health, monitor and manage their conditions….. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

Delivering Digital Inclusion: A strategic Framework for Wales Informed Health Care: A digital Health and Social Care strategy for Wales Within Wales, there is also lots of activity to improve digital inclusion and re-invent health and social services that are fit for purpose in the modern age….. These strategies talk about the importance of: creating and improving access to health records and information for patients…which we’ll talk about at the workshop sessions today Apps to support self care Underpinned by…….Ensuring patients and staff have the necessary digital skills, infrastructure and motivation. @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

Digital inclusion checklist: Start with user needs Improve access
Motivate people Keep it safe Work with others Focus on wider outcomes When creating new health care services that are truly digitally inclusive, The Government Digital Service checklist suggests you must ensure that you …. Start with user needs, not your own! Improve access – don’t make things difficult for people…going to hear this morning about the exciting Swansea City Region Project to improve infrastructure in this area Motivate people, find something they care about….and show what’s possible…educate and inspire people with the benefits they’ll receive Keep it safe – Build trust, some people are very concerned about the risks of the internet Work with others – don’t do it alone, work with other partners and make system interoperable and seamless – for staff and users… and organisations like Digital Communities Wales, who will be facilitating our workshop sessions later today – there are a growing number of organisation in wales who are supporting the digital inclusion agenda Focus on wider outcomes – measure performance – are you really getting the desired outcomes? @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL

To educate and motivate people about the benefits
Challenge for AMBU is… To create truly digitally inclusive services designed around the furthest first To educate and motivate people about the benefits To play an active role in increasing digital skills Technology and the way we interact with it is changing at breath taking speed. So the impact of digital exclusion will become greater….especially as more and more services are delivered on-line. We must create truly digitally inclusive services, that are prudent and effective in their delivery and designed around the needs of those who use them…which of course, included the furthest first. Challenge for AMBU… To create truly digitally inclusive services - that are prudent and effective in their delivery Designed around the needs of those who use them…which of course, included the furthest first. Motivate and educate people of the benefits – let people who how they can benefit – easier ways to make appointment, less need to travel, better access to information And given the number of people you serve and employ – seriously consider how you can positively contribute to improving digital skills of those who are currently excluded. (think creatively?) @C4B_ABM #C4B #DIGITAL
