It’s actually a process
Writing does not happen in the snap of a finger. It takes time. It takes a process. These are suggestions based on years of writing and years of teaching, and they are backed by volumes of research.

Prewriting This means you actually have to write things down.
Prethinking is not enough. Three options: Freewriting Brainstorming Clustering

Outlining Each Roman numeral stands for a paragraph.
Each Roman numeral is a sentence. Thesis The main point of the paper. Topic Sentence The main point of the paragraph.

Rough Draft Lots of people have anxiety about writing.
We think our first draft – or any draft – has to be perfect. It doesn’t! Just WRITE!

Peer editing and revising
A very important step. Constructive criticism and feedback are essential.

Final draft Proofread. Revise. Read on the screen and in hard copy.
Be proud of what you turn in.
