2 Nadab & Abihu – Presumptuous Worship
Leviticus 10:1-5

3 “Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them. So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord. And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.’” So Aaron held his peace. Then Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, “Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.” So they went near and carried them by their tunics out of the camp, as Moses had said” (Leviticus 10:1-5).

4 Nadab & Abihu – Presumptuous Worship
A Great Privilege

5 A Great Privilege 1) They were son of Aaron. 2) Moses was their uncle.
“Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron...” (Leviticus 10:1). 2) Moses was their uncle. “So the Lord said to Moses: “See, I have made you as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet

6 A Great Privilege 3) They were witnesses of God.
“Then Moses went up, also Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel,  and they saw the God of Israel. And there was under His feet as it were a paved work of sapphire stone, and it was like the very heavens in its clarity” (Exodus 24:9,10).

7 A Great Privilege 4) Could speak with Moses & Aaron.
“Then He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the Lord, make Myself known to him in a vision; I speak to him in a dream. Not so with My servant Moses; He is faithful in all My house. I speak with him face to face, Even plainly, and not in dark sayings; And he sees the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid To speak against My servant Moses?” (Numbers 12:6,7).

8 Nadab & Abihu – Presumptuous Worship
A Great Privilege A Presumptuous Act

9 A Presumptuous Act 1) Their sin.
“Then Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer and put fire in it, put incense on it, and offered profane fire before the Lord, which He had not commanded them” (Leviticus 10:1). Profane – “As opposite to that which is holy and legitimate, it means profane or unlawful” (Wilson’s, p. 422). BDBG says “strange to the law; strange fire” (p. 266).

10 A Presumptuous Act 2) Fire offered from another source?
“And Aaron shall bring the bull of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house, and shall kill the bull as the sin offering which is for himself. Then he shall take a censer full of burning coals of fire from the altar before the Lord, with his hands full of sweet incense beaten fine, and bring it inside the veil.  And he shall put the incense on the fire before the Lord, that the cloud of incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the Testimony, lest he die” (Leviticus 16:11-13).

11 A Presumptuous Act 3) A closer look at the text.
“And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.’” So Aaron held his peace” (Leviticus 10:3). “Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying: “Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, that you may distinguish between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean, and that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord has spoken to them by the hand of Moses” (Leviticus 10:8-11).

12 A Presumptuous Act 4) Unlawful entry?
“Now the Lord spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered profane fire before the Lord, and died; and the Lord said to Moses: “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at just any time into the Holy Place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud above the mercy seat” (Leviticus 16:1,2).

13 Nadab & Abihu – Presumptuous Worship
A Great Privilege A Presumptuous Act Unexpected Doom

14 Unexpected Doom 1) Their death. 2) Shows the severity of God.
“So fire went out from the Lord and devoured them, and they died before the Lord” (Leviticus 10:2). 2) Shows the severity of God. “Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off” (Romans 11:22).

15 Unexpected Doom 3) Want to prolong your life?
“For “He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit. Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil” (1 Peter 3:10-12).

16 Nadab & Abihu – Presumptuous Worship
A Great Privilege A Presumptuous Act Unexpected Doom A Solemn Sight

17 A Solemn Sight 1) Two men of God dead.
“Then Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, “Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.”  So they went near and carried them by their tunics out of the camp, as Moses had said” (Leviticus 10:4,5).

18 A Solemn Sight 2) Moses’ command to Aaron.
“And Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons, “Do not uncover your heads nor tear your clothes, lest you die, and wrath come upon all the people. But let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the Lord has kindled. You shall not go out from the door of the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die, for the anointing oil of the Lord is upon you.” And they did according to the word of Moses” (Leviticus 10:6,7).

19 A Solemn Sight 3) Think of the effect this has on the people.
“Then immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. And the young men came in and found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband. So great fear came upon all the church and upon all who heard these things” (Acts 5:10,11). “Better to go to the house of mourning Than to go to the house of feasting, For that is the end of all men; And the living will take it to heart” (Ecclesiastes 7:2).

20 Nadab & Abihu – Presumptuous Worship
A Great Privilege A Presumptuous Act Unexpected Doom A Solemn Sight Important Lessons

21 Important Lessons 1) Worship is to draw us near God.
“And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy…” (Leviticus 10:3). “For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20).

22 Important Lessons 2) Authorized worship glorifies God.
“And Moses said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke, saying: ‘By those who come near Me I must be regarded as holy; And before all the people I must be glorified.’” So Aaron held his peace” (Leviticus 10:3). Glorified – “be honored” (BDBG, p. 457). “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him” (John 4:23).

23 Important Lessons 3) Take advantage of our privileges.
(a) The word of God readily available to us. (b) Freedoms of our nation. (c) Many have mothers and fathers who are Christians. (d) Classes offer by good students of the Bible. (e) Material blessings that make serving the Lord even easier.

24 Important Lessons 4) Make sure there is no unexpected doom when life is over. “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.  Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” (Matthew 7:21-23).
