ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) InterNIC (Internet Network Information Center) IEEE (Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers);

4 ICANN: Private sector Non-profit Created 1998 Coordinates web addresses Mission is “keeping the Internet secure, stable and interoperable” Has no effect on content; cannot stop spam, doesn’t deal with access Runs accreditation system for registrars Ensures domain name system is run properly universal resolvability

3 supporting organisations: The organisations that deal with IP addresses The organisations that deal with domain names The managers of country code top-level domains 4 advisory committees Governments and international treaty organisations Root server operators Those concerned with the Internet’s security The “at large” community, meaning average Internet users. Technical Liaison Group works with the organisations that devise the basic protocols for Internet technologies. Final decisions made by board of directors: 15 voting members, 6 non-voting. One of the board is CEO, also has a president Ombudsman reviews the work of board and staff

Report to board showing all discussions and recommendations Board discusses and approves or sends back to supporting organisation for further rework

9 What is InterNIC? The InterNIC website is operated by ICANN to provide the public information regarding Internet domain name registration services. Visit the InterNIC website to: Search domain records in the Registry Whois Find registrar contact details in the Accredited Registrar Directory File a registrar complaint through the Registrar Problem Report Form Report inaccurate Whois data through the Whois Data Problem Report Form Started as a joint venture between AT&T and Network solutions, now run by ICANN. Registrations now carried out by commercial domain registrars Still responsible for monitoring domain names
