Dr. France Córdova – G7 Science Ministerial, Turin
“The United States also recognized that long-term, sustained investment in state-of-the-art research infrastructure, such as gravitational wave observatories, provides the capabilities needed to conduct world-leading research. Maintaining and modernizing this infrastructure is critical to getting the best value out of R&D investments. We also recognize the advantages of merit-based peer review system in guiding investments in research infrastructure. It is essential that nations come together to discuss these important issues, and we look forward to continuing work on these objectives.”

The only facility of its kind in the United States and the largest and highest-powered magnet laboratory in the world. A Federal – State funding partnership between the National Science Foundation and the State of Florida Campuses located at Florida State University, the University of Florida, and Los Alamos National Laboratory.

High Magnetic Fields lead to big discoveries in:
Many of the world’s materials, energy and life challenges are bigger than one scientific discipline can solve. The NHMFL’s interdisciplinary research environment brings together scientists across the spectrum from PHYSICS to CHEMISTRY to BIOLOGY to ENGINEERING who explore fundamental questions about MATERIALS, ENERGY and LIFE with the help of the world’s highest magnetic fields.
8
The NHMFL attracts Researchers from Around The World
In 2016, the MagLab hosted experiments by 1,778 users from 321 institutions throughout the world. 22% of NHMFL users came from outside the United States The NHMFL welcomes new researchers: 25% of the Principal Investigators (PI’s) were first-time MagLab PI’s

NEON Continental-scale ecological observation facility that gathers and synthesizes data on the impacts of climate change, land use change and invasive species on natural resources and biodiversity. The NEON observatory is designed to collect high-quality, standardized data from 81 field sites (47 terrestrial and 34 aquatic) across the U.S. (including Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico). Data collection methods are standardized across sites and include in situ instrument measurements, field sampling and airborne remote sensing. Field sites are strategically selected to represent different regions of vegetation, landforms, climate, and ecosystem performance. NEON data and resources are freely available to enable users to tackle scientific questions at scales not accessible to previous generations of ecologists.
