Types of Government found in North America

Republic Examples: United States, Mexico “Ruled by the people”
People elect officials to run the country – usually the leader is called the “President” Government is usually divided into branches so there is a system of checks and balances (Executive, Legislative, Judicial).

Constitutional Monarchy
Examples: Canada, Jamaica, Bahamas Has a “reigning monarch” – currently Queen Elizabeth II, who does not have much political power. The Prime Minister and Parliament create and enforce laws for the country (this can be compared to the president and Congress from the United States).

Communism Examples: Cuba, China
Has three political branches (Executive, Legislative, and Judicial), but the Executive branch holds all the power Current president in Cuba is Raul Castro, brother of Fidel Castro, who ruled until 2008 Based on the teachings of Karl Marx
