Mountains: Climate The temperature on mountains becomes colder, the higher the altitude gets. Mountains receive more rainfall than low lying areas because the temperature on top of mountains is lower than the temperature at sea level.

Mountains: Wildlife On a mountain, organisms and animals that live there rapidly change as elevation increases. As elevation changes, environmental components that affect wildlife, also change. This produces a wide array of wildlife and organisms living throughout the landscape of the mountain.

Mountains: Threats Until recently, mountain habitats have been largely protected because of their inaccessibility.

Mountains: Threats As people have moved into the mountains to live, for recreation and to obtain valuable resources such as timber, mountain ecosystems around the world have been subject to degradation and destruction.
