How could you determine what conditions pill bugs enjoy?
2
Step 1. Observe Pill Bugs! 1. Observe Pill Bugs in the Natural Habitat
2. Observe Pill bugs Behavior inside
3
What is science? The pursuit to discover elements of our world!!
How do we do that? We ask testable questions? What is a testable question? A question where a test can be constructed to answer the question. Ex: Do sophomores at Eastlake High prefer Coke or Pepsi Not… How can we stop world hunger?
4
Your job…Determine what conditions pill bugs (AKA rolly poly’s) prefer
5
Science is all about answering questions?
Decide a testable question that you would like to try and answer about pill bugs. Ex: Do pill bugs prefer the dark? Come up with a way to test it Is there anything you need to do to answer your question? Determine Materials Needed( you need something to hold your pill bugs in and create a condition that will be tested as being preferred. Create a method (All necessary steps to run steps) REMEMBER YOU NEED TO HAVE ENOUGH DETAIL FOR YOUR EXPERIMENT TO BE REPEATED!!! Decide what data you need to take and the best way to collect it. CREATE DATA TABLES WITH TITLES AND LABELS THAT DESCRIBE DATA YOU MUST HAVE A STAMP ON YOUR LAB BEFORE YOUR GROUP CAN PROCEED!!!!
6
In your lab book Question: Hypothesis (make sure you include a reason)
Materials Method Data Tables (Titles, Units, Labels) Run your experiment!
7
What did you determine? Was your method a good way to conduct your experiment? Why or Why not? Did you collect your data in a way that you learned anything about the pill bug? How do you know? Make a graph that shows what you concluded about your experiment. What can you conclude? Was your question a testable question? How do you know? What was your manipulated variable? What was your repsponding variable?
8
Things that scientists make sure happen.
Only one thing is tested at a time. (Variable) Manipulated Variable is what is changed Responding Variable is what you are looking to change. Experiment is Controlled Experiment is conducted the same way every time Experiment is conducted multiple times Data is organized in a way that someone can make sense of it easily. Tables have Titles and labels.
