Many Anglo Texans were children or grandchildren of patriots who fought in the American Revolution Now they took up arms against their ruler Texans were rebelling against a dictator ruler in Mexico City

Unrest at home led Mexican leaders to enforce old ignored laws and pass new ones Goals of the settlers changed over time Some Texas colonists called for war, while others opposed it Even those who favored war were not sure what they were fighting for….. Was the goal a separate state within Mexico or independence?

Santa Anna was a tyrant He ignored the Mexican Constitution of 1824 This denied Texas settlers the rights they believed they deserved

20 Battle of Gonzales Uprising at Anahuac in June 1835 against General Cos made Mexicans nervous in San Antonio Colonel sent soldiers to Gonzales to pick-up a cannon they had loaned to Texans 4 years ago to battle Comanches Alcalde of Gonzales refused without written orders

21 Battle of Gonzales Alcalde buried the cannon while 18 men prepared for a fight Texans captured all the Mexican patrol except one who escaped and reported back to San Antonio Colonel sent 100 troops to Gonzales to take the cannon but avoid a fight On October 1, the troops reached Gonzales but the Guadalupe River was too high

22 “Old Eighteen” “Old Eighteen” waited on the other side and delayed the Mexicans until help arrived 140 Texans gathered to oppose the Mexicans Texans dug up the cannon and women from town made the “Come and Take It” flag Next morning, Texans crossed Guadalupe and fired on Mexicans with cannon After brief fight and one death, the Mexicans retreated back to San Antonio

24 “Lexington” Battle of Gonzales marked the start of the Texas Revolution Called the “Lexington” of the Texas Revolution (1st battle) Texans fired the first shot!
