*Essential to democracy because: If citizens are equal, there has to be compromise More than 2 sides to an issue *Individual Freedom *Democracy cannot guarantee complete freedom Freedom of all overrule complete freedom “The right to swing my fist ends when the other man’s nose begins.” Oliver Wendell Holmes

*Majority rule: the only tool democracy has to ensure the well being of people Majority will be right more often than they are wrong *Majority must always recognize the right of minority to become the MAJORITY
