1 Periodic Trends Lab

2 Drill

3 Objectives Use a model to describe the trends in several physical properties of the elements Relate those trends to the electron configuration of the elements

4 Agenda Drill Valence Electrons Periodic Trends Lab
Periodic Trends Practice Electron Configuration Quiz on Tuesday Review Sheets

5 Valence Electrons Electrons in the outer shell of an atom
They are the ones involved in forming bonds to adjacent aotoms

6 Periodic Trends Lab You will conduct an activity to determine different trends in the periodic table There are 3 trends we are going to be looking at: Atomic Radius Ionization Energy Electronegativity

7 Atomic Radius The distance from the nucleus to the outer electrons

8 Ionization Energy The amount of energy required to remove the outermost electron of an atom of an element

9 Electronegativity The tendency for an atom to attract a pair of bonding electrons when it is combined with another atom in a chemical bond

10 Logistics Get into groups (I will tell you how many)
Pair off within those groups Each pair will look at a different trend

11 Procedure Take a well plate and label it with your names and period
Cut the straws to scale Property Conversion Factor Example (For Hydrogen) Atomic radius 1 cm =30 pm 32 pm x 1cm = cm ( 1.1 cm) 30 pm Ionization Energy 1 cm = 400 kJ 1312 kJ x 1cm = 3.28 cm ( 3.3 cm) 400 kJ Electronegativity 1 cm= 0.8 unit 2.2 units x 1cm = 2.75 cm ( 2.8 cm ) 0.8 unit

12 Use the diagram of the well plate to plan the placement of the elements
Select colored straws to represent each property Complete the conversion to determine how long the straws should be Measure and cut the straw into the appropriate length Place each piece into the appropriate well of the microplates

13 When you are done… Complete the analysis questions
Complete the periodic trends practice This will become HW if you are not done

14 HW Study for Electron Configuration Quiz on Tuesday
Finish Periodic Trends Practice
