Course Curriculum This course is designed in alignment with common core standards that regulate the English Language Arts. Assignments will address various aspects of these standards in the areas of reading, writing, grammar/mechanics, comprehension, vocabulary, and oral presentation. 2

Topics Covered During the course there will be specific written assessments (essays) focusing on: argument, exposition, rhetorical analysis, and narrative, among others. Writing is developmental and improves with practice. Students MUST be in class and participate in activities and assignments. 4

Quick Facts The common core prepares students for the rigor of college work. Prepares students to be critical thinkers and effective communicators. Shift from literary work to informational texts 70% informational, 30% literature. Emphasis on writing and using textual evidence to support claims. 5

About Grades - ALL assignments must be on time. - No late work..
- Quizzes cannot be made-up - See instructor for missed tests. Make up at an agreed time by instructor. - Extra credit only if the student has Completed 70% of assignments. 7

20%=Class Participation/Ready to learn points 20%=Class work 50%=Tests/Quizzes and Essays

Attendance Policy - Attending all classes is mandatory, please schedule doctor appointments after 3:15. - Missing class, will result in a phone call for verification of absence. - Students must arrive on time to class. 3 or more tardies will result in lunch detention and a parent conference. 10

Class Rules *Respect teacher and one another at all times.
- Follow School rules - No make-up or hair grooming - No gum, candy, food, or drink is allowed in class. No hall passes. No electronics. - Any inappropriate items (including cell phones or Ipods) items will be taken away and will be returned at the end of the semester to the parent or legal guardian. 11
