Breakout Group #1- Input from BATS, CARIACO, SBC LTER- plumes and Blooms, TMA transect
Some sites have multiple day / casts to accomplish core measurements. •PIT Trap deployment •Deep/ Surface casts •PP array Criteria for sites when considering sample order: • minimization of contamination (gasses, handling w/ organics) • importance of sample relative to water budget
2
Core sample draw order:
1. Gasses: H2S, O2, DIC 2. Salinity 3. Dissolved organic nutrients – minimize handling, head pressure from Niskin for direct filtering 4. Samples for Rate measurement where applicable 5. Dissolved inorganic nutrients 6. Particulate Nutrients, Chl a and pigments Some sites must conduct multiple cast to cover all parameters from top to bottom….site/ depth/ Niskin volume specific
3
Discussion Points: POC sampling- bias may result from settling POM within Niskin Bottle… leading to underestimate of POM. Potential Solution: In some coastal stations Niskin Bottles are double tripped such that One of the replicate bottles is drained into a carboy that can be mixed prior to sampling POM, Chl a Important to assess this bias with separate sampling cast – likely more important in coastal systems with net plankton than in Oligotrophic systems with picoplankton.
4
Discussion Points: Common sense ….Chief Sci Needs to be aware and inform officers and crew of potential boat contaminants: Bilge / garbage release Painting and needle gun work grease on sample tubing smoking
