1 How much blood does your heart pump?
Cardiac Output How much blood does your heart pump?

2 Two Factors Affect Cardiac Output
How many times your heart beats in a given time (usually 1 minute) HR=heart rate. Usually measured as BPM=beats per minute Stroke volume = How much blood your heart pumps with each beat. This is hard to measure but it is usually between 70 and 80 ml of blood.

3 Cardiac Output = stroke volume X heart rate
Example Problem: 56 year old male has a weakened heart and has a stroke volume of only 60ml. If his heart rate is 100BPM what is his CO?

4 The same man now exercises for one year and his stroke volume increases to the average 70ml
How much more blood will his heart pump out now at 100BPM compared to before? Will his resting heart rate be lower or higher than it was before and why?

5 How fast should your heart go during exercise?
A general rule is your heart should not beat faster than 220 – your age. What is a good range for training? SIMPLE FORMULA: Low number: 220-age X 0.60 High number 220-age X 0.85

6 You have been hired by this man as a personal trainer
You have been hired by this man as a personal trainer. He wants to further improve his cardiovascular fitness. He wants to know what his training range should be. His resting HR is now 70bpm. Formula for Target Heart Rate (Karnvonen) THR = (((220 – age) – RHR) X 0.85) + RHR  Highest Rate THR = (((220 – age) – RHR) X 0.6) + RHR  Lowest Rate His training Range should be ____________
