A NEW KIND OF WAR

The Great War The Great War was the biggest conflict in history up to that point. The French mobilized 8.5 million men, the Germans 11 million and the Russians 12 million. One in four of the men that fought in WWI would not come home.

Stalemate on the Western Front
The German Schlieffen plan did not work. The French and the Germans faced a stalement, a deadlock in which neither side is able to defeat the other. The battle lines in France almost remained unchanged for years. Both sides began dig deep trenches to protect their armies from fierce enemy fire.

Life in trenches Life in the trenches was terrible. Trenches were muddy and smelly. There were many dead bodies buried nearby and the latrines (toilets) sometimes overflowed into the trenches. Millions of rats infested the trenches and some grew as big as cats. There was also a big problem with lice that tormented the soldiers on a daily basis.

Trench Foot Trench foot: is a medical condition caused by prolonged exposure of the feet to damp, unsanitary, and cold conditions. Many soldiers during WWI experienced this condition.

New Technology: Machine Gun
New technology changed the way in which countries waged war. One such new advancement is the rapid fire machine gun: it mowed down waves of soldiers and allowed them to shell troops from over 12 miles away.

Poison Gas Poison gas was an uncertain weapon. Shifting winds could blow the gas back on the soldiers who launched it.

Tanks Tanks: mounted with machine guns, were designed to cross over no man’s land and broke down frequently.

Planes Planes were used to observe enemy troop movements, were equipped with machine guns and often confronted enemy planes in “dog fights.” Zeppelins: large gas filled balloons, which Germany used to bomb Great Britain's coast.
