3. Primary and secondary packaging
Primary and secondary packaging is often created from a flat form.
Transportation is an expensive part of the overall cost of a product; moving flat packed boxes helps to keep the cost down.
Primary packaging holds the product.
This is the package that you would see on a shelf in a shop. It will give a level of protection to the product, promote the product and also give product information.
Secondary packaging is used for storage and transportation of goods.
Used in warehouses where lots of the same product are packed together and stacked, waiting to be distributed to shops, or opened to fill gaps in shelves.

5. The impact of packaging on the environment

Use the packaging after the product has been removed

Make the packaging out of the materials that can be recycled. Remember energy is used in the recycling of products, so even though it’s green there’s a cost

Use waste material to fuel power stations or warm homes

Bury the material in a landfill

6. Intellectual property, patents and copyright
Intellectual property – to own an idea or creation.
Patent – a patent is a way of protecting a designer’s idea against someone stealing the technical and functional parts of their design. A patent offers protection against theft for 20 years.
An idea or creation can only be patented if:
it is new
is an inventive part that can be recognised by a non-expert
can be industrially made
it is a physical product or process.
Copyright – music, artistic work and literature cannot be covered by a patent. To ensure that the intellectual properties of these are protected, a copyright would be granted. Items which are copyrighted can be identified by the symbol ©.

7. Trademarks
A trademark is similar to copyright, but is specific to a company’s name, logo or slogan.
Registered and unregistered design.
Registered to protect the shape, pattern, texture and colour of a product.
