2 Let’s review a little bit shall we?
Korean Peninsula Juts out from Northern China Between Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea Was ruled by China. Became united under Silla Kingdom Japan conquered it became part of Japanese empire to the end of WWII Soviet Union controlled North Korea. US and United Nations occupied South Korea.

3 Let’s keep going… Korean Peninsula divided at 38th parallel.
In 1950 Korean war (or conflict). Lasted to (No treaty no victory) 1960s-1990s two separate countries. Different ideas. 2000 Leaders met for first time since the division of the peninsula.

4 Let’s go back a bit A.D. 668-935 Silla kingdom united peninsula.
Korea made many cultural and scientific advances. Built one of the world’s earliest astronomical observatories.

5 More cultural advances
1400’s scholars invented a new way to writ the Korean language. (Hangul) Uses 24 symbols. Far fewer than the thousands of characters need to write Chinese. Which means it’s easier to learn.

6 Pottery? One of the great achievements of early Koreans was pottery.
Korean potters still make bowls and dishes that are admired worldwide.

7 Now Let’s Talk about South Korea.

8 Facts about South Korea
Much of its land is covered by mountains. Most South Koreans live in coastal areas. They are affected by monsoons.

9 Do You remember Monsoons?
Monsoon: seasonal wind that blows over a continent for months at a time. Summer: monsoon brings hot, humid weather. Winter: Brings cold dry weather.

10 Economics One of Asia’s economic powers.
Manufacturing and trade dominate South Korea’s economy. Leading exporter in ships, cars, textiles, computers, and electronic appliances. Farms are small but major crops are rice, barley, onions, potatoes, cabbage, apples, and tangerines. Rice is the country’s basic food item.

11 South Korea’s People Population is 48 million
80% live in towns in the coastal plains. Capital and largest city is Seoul. Buddhism, Confucianism, and Christianity are major religions.

12 Hiiiiiiiiiiiiii Yah!!! Korea has a tradition of martial Arts. Tae Kwon Do started in Korea.

13 South Korea’s President
Lee Myung-bak was elected president on February 25, 2008. According to law he will serve one 5 year term. He cannot be re-elected.
