IEEE-USA Precollege Education Committee (PEC) was established in 1984 to help improve the quality of precollege education and to raise the level of functional and technological literacy of United States students by placing emphasis on mathematics and science. PEC's objective is to keep alive the innate curiosity of young children about science as they move into middle school and high school, so that they will continue to study mathematics, science, and technology.

3. IEEE PEC Objectives
Increase K-12 student interest and skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
Provide K-12 teacher education and curriculum ideas
Enable IEEE members to share their interests and skills with today’s youth
Maintain the US global position in technology fields

4. R1 PEC 2009 Goals
Seek a pre-college coordinator for each of the four areas of R1, as well as a standing committee.
Coordinate with IEEE PEC to catalog and develop pre-college programs.
Complete a pre-college student program in my area during the first quarter of 2009.
Execute an EAB-Teacher In-Service Program (TISP) event in each of the four areas of R1.
Share results with other regions of IEEE PEC. Include lessons learned, best practices, canned content.
Present Pre-college program plans/status at the February 2009 R1 meeting, and Pre-college accomplishments at the August 2009 R1 meeting.

Youll see that my first goal impacts each of you.  When I took on this role (recently) I noticed that it was easy for me to envision pre-college activities in my immediate location.  I could see deep into the needs of my local schools.  But I couldnt easily see the needs of educators, counselors, parents and students from other sections, let alone other areas.    This is where I need your help. Alone, I can develop pre-college activities in my immediate area, but with the help of volunteers throughout the region, I can extend those programs to achieve broader value across all four areas.  I ask each of you to help me find a pre-college coordinator from your area.  Please solicit your area chairs and identify a volunteer in your area to help me coordinate pre-college activities.  I need the volunteers on board on 1/1/09 to get rolling right away on our activities.   Also, please summarize any recent or ongoing pre-college activities you have in your area, and identify any needs you have.  Some sections (Boston, Worcester and Berkshire) already have operational pre-college programs.  I would like to see how we can bring the lessons learned and best practices from those programs throughout our region.   Youll see that Goal 4 is to execute a TISP in each of your areas.  This is a program that has run very well with positive feedback from other regions.  You can find info at .   Ideally, we can create a single program that can be executed in each of the four areas.   I look forward to working with you throughout 2009.
