Foreshortening What is Foreshortening?
Definition: Foreshortening occurs when an object appears compressed when seen from a particular viewpoint, and the effect of perspective causes distortion. Foreshortening is a particularly effective artistic device, used to give the impression of three-dimensional volume and create drama in a picture. Foreshortening is most successful when accurately rendered on the picture plane to create the illusion of a figure in space.

Foreshortening as Exaggerated Illusion
Create an original piece that emphasizes foreshortening For this project you will: strategically take photographs of people you know using angles that provide you with a foreshortened look. Then you will choose one to draw and create an original/stylistic piece from. Problem-Solving Elements: Take several photos of people you know in foreshortened poses; you must turn in a minimum of 4 for study and design conversation; these need to be printed out (black and white or color) 5 x 7 inches or 8 x10 inches o You will need to get very close up to your subjects in order to get foreshortened images o All photography must be done by you; no taking internet images! Foreshortening should take up a large portion of the composition space Style choices and materials are open for this project but I must see a creative integration of newspaper or other materials collaged into the piece (in the clothing/background).
