Proper Netiquette What is netiquette?
The principle of understanding what is allowable, and ethical versus what is not when using the internet or cyberspace. Understanding that the computer, and networks are always being watch. There is always a connection to someone else….seen or unseen! Proper internet communication between you and others

Proper Netiquette Be Mindful of what you say!!!!
Remember the Golden Rule applies to Netiquette as well. You can not delete what is published via internet. Be sure it is something you would say in person to someone. Freedom of Speech! Always be respectful and cordial , even if you disagree with what was said.

Copyright and Fair Use Always assume that all material on the internet in copyrighted. Always cited the works that are being used as sources of information. Copyright: grants authors of work the legal rights to decide how or if the work will be produced, displayed, distributed or performed.

Copyright and Fair Use What is fair use?
Copyright law allows certain pieces of copyrighted work to be used without obtaining the creator’s permission for specific reasons.

When Is Fair Use Appropriate
Instructional purposes when copies are being made to teach or present in a learning atmosphere. For example…..a single copy may be made of a chapter from a book, an article from a periodical, a short story, essay, poem, or image.

Plagiarism to steal and conceive (the ideas or words of another) as one's own. Recreating material one’s works to use without citing the author or authors. to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.

Words are stolen! Someone else’s work is turned in as your own Credit is not given Quotation marks are not used when needed Incorrect information is given about a source Too many words are copied, making up the majority of your work.

Safety on the Web Be very aware of what you are placing or putting on the internet Never put your personal information or business on the internet Protect your finances and other personal belongings $$$ Make sure s are from recognizable sources Be mindful of who you are in communication with online.

Safety on your computer
Use passwords that are hard for others to guess, but easy for the user to remember Only download from sources that are known and safe Avoid scams that ask for SSN, bank account & credit card info Install protection software to prevent spam, viruses. Make sure these sources are up to date and regulated Always log off the computer once you are done with usage SAFETY FIRST!

Conclusion Netiquette
The internet is a great tool that can be used for research, communication, purchases and social interaction. It can also be dangerous in the form of identity theft, harassment, and misusage of communication. Please be aware of practices of netiquette and how it can prevent these awful things from occurring. Use the internet with caution, and insight trusted judgement when dealing with internet or cyberspace adventures.
