Rhetorical devices (literary techniques used to prove a point)
Logos – an appeal to reason relies on logic or reason. Logos often depends on the use of inductive or deductive reasoning. (stats) Pathos – an emotional appeal, appeals to an audience's needs, values, and emotional sensibilities. Ethos - ethical appeal is based on the character, credibility, or reliability of the writer. There are many ways to establish good character and credibility as an author (quote from authority) Rhetorical Questions - a question that a writer asks without expecting an answer. The question might be one that does not have an answer. It might also be one that has an obvious answer but you have asked the question to make a point, to persuade or for literary effect. It can be used to set up a persuasive argument. (“In a world awash with electric light…how would Van Gogh have given the world his “Starry Night”? Who knows what this vision of the night sky might inspire in each of us, in our children or grandchildren?”)
