Artist - Vincent Van Gogh Title – “Starry Night”
Name Ch 13 Post-Impressionism period Date Vincent van Gogh worked feverishly for only ten years before he committed suicide and ended his tragic life. Van Gogh spent most of his painting years in France, had few friends, and devoted himself fully to his painting. His early work was traditional in technique, dark in value and somber in color. But once he saw the work of the Impressionists, his colors brightened and his brushstrokes became visible. Van Gogh jabbed at his canvas with vigorous strokes, applying paint in thick impasto. Van Gogh felt he had to say something about the subject or about himself and his own emotional involvement with the subject. Artist - Vincent Van Gogh Title – “Starry Night” Artists who express their feelings and emotions through their work are called expressionists. Van Gogh began the Expressionist movement. Van Gogh used choppy strokes to build up a textural surface. He used complementary colors – colors that are located opposite each other on a color wheel. When these colors mixed together they will tend to make a brown mud color. When you place complementary colors side by side they produce a shocking contrast of color.

Title – “Vision After the Sermon”
Post-Impressionism Artist - Gauguin Title – “Vision After the Sermon” Gauguin wanted to return to a primitive style of art with simple forms and symbolism rendered in a decorative and stylized way. He flattened form into decorative shapes and combined brilliant colors to express his feelings. The search for religious experience was important to Gauguin. In “The Vision after the Sermon” he tried to show the simple direct faith of the peasants of Brittany Instead of natural colors, Gauguin used stained-glass colors to depict the trance-like rapture of the peasant women. Gauguin hoped to find a simple and more meaningful lifestyle in Tahiti.

Turn-of-the-Century Expressionism
Artist - Munch Title – “The Scream” (The Cry) Munch was obsessed with death, and it is featured continuously in his art. His vision remained highly personal. His first one-person show was a total disaster. The subject matter of his paintings was too pessimistic and gloomy for most people. The exhibition caused an uproar and had to be closed for a week. It is almost as if the sound waves coming out of her mouth turn into fast flowing water This is a very disturbing painting.
