Characteristics of Microorganisms
3
Bacteria (Monerans) Bacteria – Are prokaryotes – “before the nucleus”.
Bacteria do not have a nucleus. They have cell membranes and some have cell walls.
4
Bacteria (Monerans) They are single-celled organisms (made of only one cell).
5
Bacteria (Monerans) Bacteria come in three shapes. Coccus (Round)
Spirillum (Spiral) Bacillus (Rod)
6
Bacteria (Monerans) They can be producers, consumer, and/or decomposers. Some can move with a whip-like tail – a flagellum.
7
Bacteria (Monerans) What Are Bacteria?
8
Protozoans (Protists)
Protozoans – Are called eukaryotes – “true nucleus”. Protists have a nucleus. They also have organelles (little organs).
9
Protozoans (Protists)
They are mostly single-celled organisms (made of one cell). You should know three protozoans.
10
Protozoans (Protists)
The Amoeba It is clear. It has no regular shape. It is a consumer. Moves using pseudopods (false foot).
11
Protozoans (Protists)
The Euglena It is green. It has an oval shape. It is both producer and consumer. Moves using a flagellum (whip-like tail).
12
Protozoans (Protists)
The Paramecium It is pale. It is oval. It is a consumer. Moves using cilia (hair-like structures surrounding the paramecium).
13
Protozoans (Protists)
What are protists?
14
Fungi (fungus) Fungi – Are eukaryotes – “true nucleus”.
Can be single-celled or multi-celled. They also have organelles (little organs).
15
Fungi (fungus) Cannot move on their own. Are consumers.
Are decomposers. Mostly consume dead or dying things.
16
Fungi (fungus) Examples of fungi. Mushrooms Mold Mildew
17
Fungi (fungus) What Are Fungi? 10 Amazing Facts About Fungi.
