2. Can and May: Offering help.
Can and may are both used to offer help.
For example:
“Can I help you?”
(Is it possible to help you?)
“May I help you?” or “May I?”
(“May” is more polite.)
Responses will be either a yes or no.
Response 1: “Yes, please.” “Thank you.”
“I appreciate it.”
Response 2: “No, that’s okay.” “Thank you, though.”

3. Can and May: Asking for permission.
“Can I go to the bathroom?”
“May I go to the bathroom?”
Responses will always be “yes” or “no.”
Yes, you can …..
No you can’t ……

4. What if you need help?
Can you help me?
Can you help me carry the groceries?
Can you help me with my homework?

5. Asking a question about some ability?
Can you throw away the trash?
Can you read and write in Spanish?
Can you drive a car?
Response: Yes, I can drive a car.
No, I can’t drive a car.

6. Using “can” to show capability. (skill, talent)
A chef can cook because he or she is
trained in cooking.
A medical doctor can examine sick or
injured patients because he or she is
trained in medicine.
The President of the United States can speak
English because he is an American.

Can you play a piano?
Can you lift 100 kilos?

8. Can you tell me ………..?
Can you tell me what time it is?
Can you tell me where the restroom?
Can you tell me when the homework is due?
