1 Elements of Fiction Flashback Foreshadowing Characterization Conflict

2 Foreshadowing The author’s use of clues to hint at what might happen later in the story.

3 Flashback A scene within a story that interrupts the sequence of events.

4 Protagonist The main character in a story is called the protagonist. She or he is always involved in the main conflict and its resolution.

5 Antagonist The person opposing the protagonist is called the antagonist.

6 Types of Conflict .

7 External Conflict There are three types of external conflict: character vs. character; character vs. society; and character vs. nature.

8 Character vs. Character
The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with others, especially the antagonist.

9 Character vs. Society The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with society as a whole.

10 Character vs. Nature The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with the elements of nature.

11 Internal Conflict The protagonist in the story experiences conflict with her or his conscience.
