Mixtures: A Simple Experiment

Question: Is the color black a mixture?

Prediction: I think that black …is a mixture / is not a mixture. I think this because…

Materials: 3 different brands of black markers (water soluble)
Paper Towels Glass Beakers Water Scissors Pencil

Procedure: Cut the paper towels into strips that are 3 cm wide and run the full width of the towel. Measure up 10 cm from the bottom of each strip of paper towel. Mark the spot with a small pencil line. Select a black marker Make a small dot (1-2 cm) at the 10 cm mark with your marker.

Procedures cont… Repeat steps 2-4 with each marker.
Fill your glass jars or beakers with 20 ml of water. Place each strip of paper towel into the beaker. Be sure the black dot is not placed in the water. Wait as the water is absorbed by the paper towel. Observe what happens to the black dots.

Results: 1. What happened to the black dots when the water reached them? 2. What colors did you see? 3. Did all of the markers show the same colors? 4. Is the ink in the markers a mixture or a compound? Why?
