End Scene: The Great Gatsby (2013)
8
Group Analysis… Consider and discuss in your group the following:
What characters are in this last scene? What theme(s) do you see most reflected in this ending? Explain how each theme relate to The Great Gatsby in this scene as throughout the whole story. What locations define the setting? What is happening in this scene? Give me some actions in the resolution of the plot.
9
More things to consider…
In the 2013 Version of The Great Gatsby, who is the character narrating the final scene? How is he depicted in this final scene? Describe his feelings of empathy and sympathy and they relate to Jay Gatsby. Clarify his relationship to Jay Gatsby as a friend. Who came to Jay Gatsby’s funeral except Nick Carraway? What do you believe is the significance of Nick Carraway stating that Daisy Buchanan did not even send a flower when Jay Gatsby died? What is the significance of the Green Light? What does it represent? What was Jay Gatsby’s dream? Who was the focus of that dream? (Hint: Jay Gatsby has wealth, but what or whom does he wish to acquire?)
10
Create your own ending…
In your groups, create an original ending to The Great Gatsby!
11
Think about… What would you change and do different from the final scene you have just viewed? What characters would be portrayed in your ending? What would be the setting? What theme or message pertaining to the novel as a whole should be represented in your ending?
12
Lights, Camera, Action… In your groups, write a short 5 minute scene for your original ending. Be creative, but stay true to the characters, themes, and language of The Great Gatsby.
13
Writing Guidelines You will need to work together to make decisions about the resolution to the plot with taking the overall theme of The Great Gatsby into consideration. You will need to develop dialogue for characters within your scene. Roles need that to be believable and have characteristics reflectively defining the characters and themes of the novel. You are able to use any characters from the entire novel to enhance or change your ending. You may make up new characters as long as the characters can be placed within the plot line and go along with the themes within The Great Gatsby. You also need to make sure that all dialogue and action by any character accurately matches that character’s characteristics and traits. The scene must also stay consistent in theme of the overall novel and character relationships there within.
14
Production Guidelines
As a group, you will present your scene in front of the class. Every student in the group must participate in the presentation or production of the presentation as part of the scene or behind the scenes as a director or narrator. You will be turning in a hand written scene for a grade. Make sure everyone in your group has his or her name on the paper. You will also be performing your scene in front of the class for a separate grade.
