1 Development of android app for estimation and visualization of irrigation water demand
Prashant K Srivastava IESD, Banaras Hindu University

2 Introduction Irrigation water management represents the use of the suitable quantity of water at the proper time and it is usually pursued by combining measurements of soil moisture, precipitation and Evapotranspiration (ET) along with the soil properties. Efficient Irrigation water management will help in improving the management of water resources and reduce pressure on the society facing water scarcity. It will help in maximizing the crop yields, soil and water conservation as well as minimize leaching of water and nutrients to the groundwater

3 Objectives Real time estimation of soil moisture, precipitation and ET at higher resolution using the Satellites. Estimation of field soil hydraulic parameters using soil type information from FAO and field measurements. Real time display and visualization of irrigation water demand and soil water content using mobile technology through the developed android app.

4 Datasets and Methodology
In this study the satellite products from SMOS, MODIS and TRMM will be utilized for hydro-meteorological datasets. For estimation of soil properties laboratory based analysis will be used along with the installation of in- situ soil moisture network at selected locations for validation of soil moisture from satellite, while rain gauge will be used for precipitation. The ROSETTA model will be used for soil hydraulic parameters using soil type, texture, bulk density and organic carbon optimized by Artificial Neural networks. The hydro-meteorological variables will be used with soil hydraulic parameters for estimation of irrigation water demand. The irrigation water demand will be presented using the android app and can be used with mobile.

5 Budget with Justification
S.No. Name of item Budget (in Rs.) 1 In-situ soil moisture with data logger (03) 90,000 2 Temperature sensors with data logger (03) 60,000 3 Web hosting 10,000 4 Travel and field sampling 20,000 5 Contingency 24,000 6 Consumables 7 Stipend 72,000 Total 3,00,000 In-situ soil moisture and temperature sensors will monitor the real time soil moisture and soil temperature in the field and required to estimate the threshold for deciding the amount of irrigation. It will be further used for validation of satellite products. All the datasets will be maintained through a web domain for visualization of soil moisture, temperature and evapotranspiration information. Mobile app will be also distributed initially through this web domain. For collection of soil and vegetation samples travel money is required. Contingency will be used for minor equipments purchase for soil sample analysis. Cost of field capacity and permanent wilting point analysis will be also paid from this money. Consumables money will be utilized for purchase of chemicals for soil texture, type, for purchase of chemicals and bulk density and organic carbon analysis. A nominal stipend will be provided to the student for soil sample collection, maintenance of one small field at IESD with winter wheat crop and soil analysis.

6 Duration with timeline of activities (18 months)
Recruitment of manpower Literature survey and collection of related materials Collection of soil samples Satellite data processing and soil analysis Developing the algorithm and code formulations Creation of android app for smart phones Compilation of results in the form of report and publications

7 Key Deliverables Display of soil moisture, ET and precipitation over selected locations Real time irrigation water demand map of agricultural areas Alerts for irrigation scheduling practices Development of novel and promising android app suitable for smart phones
