What do Parents and Families Need to Know? We are all learning together. Making mistakes is a natural part of learning. We will persevere through solving problems, using many different strategies to make sense of mathematical concepts. Students will be using high-quality resources to support their mathematical understanding Avon Community Schools Administration and Board of School Trustees fully supports Secondary Mathematics Teachers in the pursuit and pilot of conceptual understanding as a model for instruction. 3 Conceptual Math vs. Traditional Math
Learn just answer or strategy Given all information and material Teacher Talking Learn from Teacher Student learns one way to do math Each day is a new lesson and new topic (easily left behind) Learn the How and Why Learn through exploration Group Work Collaboration Learn from each other (with teacher as back up) Multiple strategies explored Each lesson builds upon the next few days

4 Students will learn how to productively struggle—to work through problems without formally been “taught” Students will do this through exploration, collaboration, and questioning strategies. Students will learn from one another prior till I step in. I will direct students with questioning strategies rather than directly giving them answers. Students will experience and work through unfamiliar problems that may require deep thinking, productive struggle, and perseverance. The “Struggle”

5 There will be an in-class set of books for the students to use while they are here.
They will be given (next week) an access code to allow them to look at the text outside of my classroom. All in class worksheets will be posted on Schoology. *****Our Book is not here yet-----just waiting on the delivery! SORRY!!!****** Our Book
