4. *6th Grade Transition to Pre-Algebra Math Program*
-The program is aligned to the Common Core State Standards and will be challenging and interesting as long as students learn to pursue the opportunities offered.
-Appropriate placement is key.
-Each student is expected to reach upward mathematically, but have success within his/her grasp.
-This math course is fast paced and will firmly establish a general foundation for pre-algebra and future mathematics.

Unit 4 – Ratios and Rates

6. *Work Philosophy* The student must step up! The teacher must support!
Encourage students to ask questions in class, independently use their resources & seek extra help.
Give credit for every attempt to complete assignments where work is shown.
Guide students to be more independent learners who use their resources to recall, understand and practice.
We are learning through exploration and from our mistakes.
Many enrichment activities will be offered to be sure the program is challenging. Encourage your child to take advantage of them.

7. Student vs. Parent Responsibilities
Establish a quiet HW location/routine.
2 ½ hours per week
Support and guide your child with HW- don’t do it for him or her.
Encourage the use of class notes, online textbook and resources to recall and practice while showing work.
Help with weekly checks (Backpacks, homework, supplies, communication, etc);

May Include: Homework, Participation, Classwork

13. Encouraging Good Homework Habits
Having a regular time to do homework helps children finish assignments. The best schedule is one that works for your child and your family. What works well in one household may not work well in another. For instance, one child may do homework best in the afternoon, completing homework first or after an hour of play and another may do it best after dinner. However, don’t let your child leave homework to do just before bedtime. Remember, children are more likely to complete homework successfully when parents monitor their assignments.
How homework benefits your child…
Homework assignments are given to students for a multitude of reasons:
To review and practice what they’ve covered in class;
To get ready for the next day’s class;
To learn to use resources, such as libraries, reference materials and web sites to discover information;
To explore subjects more fully than classroom time permits;
To integrate their learning by applying many different skills to a single task, such as projects and long term assignments.
Homework can also help students develop
good study habits and positive attitudes.
It can teach them to become
independent learners.
