1 STUDY IT FOR YOURSELF! Have the attitude of the Bereans…
… take what you are taught and search the Scriptures each day to see if what was taught is what the Word of God says [Acts 17:11]! Have the attitude of the Bereans…

2 Jesus – His Life: Part 3: The Popular Christ

3 QUESTION – STAND at a DISTANCE to Jesus, SEPERATED by TIME and SPACE
What would you consider as the BIGGEST HINDRANCE to KNOWING WHO Jesus IS TODAY? Perhaps the fact that we STAND at a DISTANCE to Jesus, SEPERATED by TIME and SPACE

4 The “Man of Sorrows” He has NO STATELY FORM or MAJESTY that we SHOULD LOOK UPON Him, Nor APPEARANCE that we should be ATTRACTED to Him. He was DESPISED and FORSAKEN of men,

5 AQUAINTED with GRIEF; like one from whom men HIDE their face,
A MAN of SORROWS, AQUAINTED with GRIEF; like one from whom men HIDE their face, He was DESPISED, and we DID NOT ESTEEM Him

6 Jesus Popularity News spreads quickly – Mark 1:28 The whole town gathers – Mark 1:32-33 Everyone is looking for Jesus – Mark 1:37 The people clamor for Jesus – Mark 1:45

7 WHY Did Jesus EFFECT People
the WAY He DID?

8 THERE WAS JUST SOMETHING DIFFERENT about this Man!
It WAS NOT the WAY He LOOKED! It WAS NOT THAT He TOLD the people WHAT they WANTED to HEAR! THERE WAS JUST SOMETHING DIFFERENT about this Man!

9 Jesus – NOT an ORDINARY Man

10 The Gospel of Mark HIGHLIGHTS the RISING POPULARITY of Jesus
Mark 1:16-20 – The GROWING NUMBER of DISCIPLES Mark 1:21-27 – People are AMAZED in Capernaum… … verses REVEAL Jesus as a teacher WHO TEACHES with AUTHORITY!

11 Mark 1:23-27 REVEAL Jesus is more than a teacher Who teaches with authority –
Jesus HAS ALL AUTHORITY [Matthew 28:18] In Mark 1:23-27 Jesus AMAZES the people WHEN He DEMONSTRATES His POWER and AUTHORITY.

12 The POWER and AUTHORITY of Jesus

13 The DIFFERENCE that MADE Jesus POPULAR WAS His AUTHORITY and His POWER
The Holy Spirit moves Mark to use the word ex-oo-see’-ah (Strong’s Greek noun number 1849) TWICE [verses 22 and 27]. The word can mean “AUTHORITY”, OR it can mean “POWER”

14 The Holy Spirit’s POINT is that Jesus EMITTED ex-oo-see’-ah, and THOSE WHO HAD CONTACT with Jesus RECOGNIZED this POWER and AUTHORITY!

15 Jesus Had a POWERFUL MESSAGE – Mark 1:14-15, 21-22
[14] And after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, PREACHING the GOSPEL of God, [15] and saying, “The TIME IS FULFILLED, and the KINGDOM of God is at hand; REPENT and BELIEVE in the GOSPEL.”

16 Jesus Had a POWERFUL INFLUENCE OVER OTHERS – Mark 1:17-20
[17] And Jesus said to them, “FOLLOW ME” [18, 20] … they IMMEDIATELY LEFT and FOLLOWED Him.

17 Jesus Had POWER OVER EVIL – Mark 1:21-27 ; 5:1-15; 9:16-29
[27] And they were all AMAZED, so that they debated among themselves, saying, "WHAT IS THIS? A new teaching with AUTHORITY! He commands even the UNCLEAN SPIRITS, and they OBEY Him.”

18 They KNEW Jesus had POWER!
Jesus Had POWER OVER SICKNESS – Mark 1:29-34, 40; 6:13, 55-56 Mark 1:30-31 –Simon's mother-in-law Mark 1:32-34 – the town’s sick and possessed Mark 1:40-45 – a leper WHY would they do that? They KNEW Jesus had POWER!

19 Jesus Had AUTHORITY TO FORGIVE SINS – Mark 2:1-12
“BUT IN ORDER THAT you MAY KNOW that the Son of Man HAS AUTHORITY on earth TO FORGIVE SINS”

20 Jesus Had AUTHORITY TO RESTORE PHYSICAL DEFORMITIES – Mark 3:1-5
“Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his HAND was RESTORED.”

21 Jesus Had AUTHORITY OVER the NATURAL ELEMENTS – Mark 4:35-41; 6:45-52
[39] And being aroused, He REBUKED the wind and said to the sea, “HUSH, BE STILL.” And the wind died down and IT BECAME PERFECTLY CALM.

22 Jesus Had AUTHORITY and POWER OVER DEATH – Mark 5:22-24, 35-43
[41] And taking the child by the hand, He said to her, “Talitha kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!”). [42] And IMMEDIATELY the girl ROSE and BEGAN TO WALK

23 The PRIORITIES of Jesus
as they occur in the Gospel of Mark

24 The PRINCIPLE of FIRST OCCURRENCE
1. The FIRST time something OCCURS! 2. The ORDER in which things OCCUR!

25 The PRIORITIES of Jesus
Mark 1:14-15 – PREACHING the GOOD NEWS of the KINGDOM Mark 1:16-20 – MAKING DISCIPLES Mark 1:21-26 – CONFRONTING the FORCES of EVIL Mark 1:29-34 – COMFORTING the SICK and AFFLICTED – PREACHING the GOOD NEWS of the KINGDOM – MAKING DISCIPLES – CONFRONTING the FORCES of EVIL – COMFORTING the SICK and AFFLICTED

26 PREPARING for PRIORITIES
Mark 1:35-39 [35] And in the early morning, WHILE IT WAS STILL DARK, HE AROSE and went out and departed to a lonely place, AND WAS PRAYING there.

27 IN ORDER THAT I may PREACH there also;
[37] … and said to Him, “EVERYONE IS LOOKING for You.” [38]  And He said to them, “LET US GO somewhere else to the towns nearby, IN ORDER THAT I may PREACH there also; for THAT is WHAT I CAME out FOR.”

28 [39] And He WENT into their synagogues throughout all Galilee,
PREACHING and CASTING OUT the demons.

29 CONFLICTING PRIORITIES
Mark 1:40-45 [40] And a LEPER CAME to Him, BESEECHING Him and FALLING on his KNEES before Him, and saying to Him, “IF YOU ARE WILLING, YOU CAN MAKE ME CLEAN.”

30 [41] And moved with compassion, He stretched out His hand, and touched him, and said to him, “I AM WILLING; BE CLEANSED.” [42] And IMMEDIATELY the leprosy left him and HE WAS CLEANSED.

31 [43] And HE STERNLY WARNED him and IMMEDIATELY sent him away, [44] and He said to him, “See that you SAY NOTHING to ANYONE; but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.”

32 [45] BUT he went out and BEGAN TO PROCLAIM IT FREELY and TO SPREAD the NEWS about, TO SUCH AN EXTENT that Jesus COULD NO LONGER publicly ENTER A CITY, but STAYED OUT IN UNPOPULATED AREAS; and they were coming to Him from everywhere.

33 CONFLICTING PRIORITIES

41 HAVING the COURAGE to KEEP PRIORITIES STRAIGHT!

42 Mark 2:1-11 [3] And they came, bringing to Him a PARALYTIC, carried by four men. [5] And Jesus SEEING THEIR FAITH said to the paralytic, “My son, your SINS are FORGIVEN.”

43 [8] And IMMEDIATELY Jesus, aware in His spirit that they were reasoning that way within themselves, said to them, “Why are you reasoning about these things in your hearts?”

44 OR to say, [9] “WHICH IS EASIER, TO SAY to the paralytic,
‘Your SINS ARE FORGIVEN’; OR to say, ‘ARISE, and TAKE UP YOUR PALLET and WALK’?”

45 [10] “BUT IN ORDER THAT you may KNOW that the Son of Man has AUTHORITY on earth TO FORGIVE SINS” — He said to the paralytic — [11] “I say to you, RISE, TAKE UP YOUR PALLET and go home.”

46 “WHICH IS EASIER (for YOU)?
to say, “Jesus IS MESSIAH-CHRIST, DELIVERER, SAVIOR, LORD, my GOD?” OR to, RECEIVE the WORD OF GOD, ARISE from the waters of BAPTISM, and LIVE the LIFE of a DISCIPLE?

47 BUT IN ORDER THAT the WORLD may KNOW that JESUS IS the Son of GOD!
ARISE, and GO INTO YOUR WORLD, TEACHING and MAKING disciples!

48 Here is your Invitation to RECAPTURE a True SENSE of the LIVING Lord
Jesus, the Messisah - Christ
