I. Types of Law A. Constitutional Law – (Judicial Branch) highest form of law. Based on the constitution and Judicial interpretation B. Statutory Law- (Legislative Branch) Laws created and passed by lawmakers of all levels 1. Statutes – laws that apply to the entire country or state 2. Ordinances – laws that apply to a city or county

C. Administrative/Regulatory Law – (Executive Branch) rules and regulations passed by the executive officers at all levels 1. Agencies in the Federal Bureaucracy make laws for the good of the people a. FDA – regulates food, pharmaceuticals and medical devices b. FCC – regulates communications by radio, TV, satellite and cable c. CDC – regulates health and safety d. EPA – regulates environmental safety

D. Common Law – cases bound by precedent (looking at similar cases and following an earlier ruling)

E. Criminal Law – laws that try to prevent people from deliberately or recklessly harming one another or another’s property 1. can be found at all levels of government (federal, state, local)

2. Its an adversarial system meaning that there are two opposing sides:
a. Prosecution – always the government, they are the group accusing another party for committing a crime b. Defendant – the individual or group accused of a crime
