Barrier Island Welcome to E.P.Todd’s 5th Grade Trip to Barrier Island. Please click each picture to learn more about our trip.

Vikings Lead the Way Departing on Big 16 Champion Viking High School buses at 7:30, we arrived at Barrier Island around 11:30. It was a long trip, but we got to see a lot of our beautiful state.

Moving In Now everyone is ready to move into their new home for the next 3 days. This cabin sleeps 18 children and 2 adults. It is only 30 meters from the beach.

The Beach Wow!!! Miles of beach and it all belonged to us. Our chaperones had to be with us all the time, but they were a lot of fun.

Time to Eat We ate family style and we laughed a lot.

Pondering Life This activity is great as we explored and studied the animals that live in a fresh water pond located right behind the cabins. We waded in with nets and caught minnows and dragonfly nymphs.

The Aquarium Many of the fish found at Barrier Island were contained in their aquarium. We especially enjoyed the flounder and the sea urchins.

Field Groups During the activities we were divided into field groups, consisting of 12 children and 1 or 2 chaperones.

The Saltwater Marsh A walk into the marsh!

The Pit The marsh walk ends at the famous “pit”. We were in the mud and detritus up to our armpit. If Mom could only see me now!

Sunset It was truly a beautiful sight. This is one of the few places in the world that you see the sun set into the Atlantic Ocean. Think about that!!

Seining I wonder what we will catch with those huge nets. If it is big enough we get to put it into the aquarium.

Need A Friend Teamwork is the key to this activity. Each field group is faced with an obstacle that cannot be accomplished with cooperation and teamwork.

Time To Go Home We had a great picnic lunch at the pavilion right before we boarded the buses.

Angel Oak Click arrow to end show About 20 minutes from Barrier Island we stopped at Angel Oak, the largest and oldest oak tree in South Carolina and took this picture. We got home to Spartanburg at 5:00 to some very anxious parents. Did we have some stories for them.
