4 Let the light of Christ shine in our lives
Gather The Lord be with you And also with you Let the light of Christ shine in our lives

5 Receive Now, the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the land, you shall keep the festival of the Lord, lasting seven days; a complete rest on the first day, and a complete rest on the eighth day. On the first day you shall take the fruit of majestic trees, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook; and you shall rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days… Continues on next slide

6 Receive … You shall keep it as a festival to the Lord seven days in the year; you shall keep it in the seventh month as a statute for ever throughout your generations. You shall live in booths for seven days; all that are citizens in Israel shall live in booths, so that your generations may know that I made the people of Israel live in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God. From the book of Leviticus, chapter 23, verses 39-43

7 Engage Sukkot commemorates the years that the Jews spent in the desert on their way to the Promised Land, and celebrates the way in which God protected them under difficult desert conditions. Sukkot is also known as the Feast of Tabernacles, or the Feast of Booths. The word sukkot means huts (some translations of the bible use the word booths), and building a hut is the most obvious way in which Jews celebrate the festival… Continues on next slide

8 Engage … Most people nowadays live in buildings with strong walls and roof. Spending time in a fragile hut in the garden, or under a roof of leaves rigged up on a balcony gives them the experience of living exposed to the world, without a comfy shell around them. It reminds them that there is only one real source of security and protection, and that is God.

9 Engage Video suggestion … Sukkot in Jerusalem and around the world
Some discussion ideas … What gives you the feeling of protection? How would you celebrate after experiencing a difficult event? What forms of protection do we need in modern society? Discussion techniques - Go back to the Bible passage ask “How does the theme link with the Bible passage?” Discuss the question in pairs for 30 seconds then invite a response from each pair. Use quick-fire answers e.g. throw a soft bean bag / toy to a student, when they answer they throw it back and you quickly throw to another student. Simplify the question - Invite quick one-word answers, write them on the board, then reflect on the answers – see connections. Activity suggestion … Pretend you have crash-landed in a forest, far from the nearest town, what would you need to survive?

10 Respond Amen God, we thank you for protection,
[Reflect for a minute on the worship theme and our engagement …] God, we thank you for protection, the protection given to us in our homes and at school. May we help in whatever way we can to make our homes and schools good places to be for our families and friends. Amen Prayer / reflection technique – Give a summary of the theme and any responses that students may have made, then invite everyone to be still (remind no books open etc – lessen distraction). To pray or reflect on today’s worship. Be quiet for one minute. Then say the prayer …

11 Go out into the world with the light of Christ
